July is National Cell Phone Courtesy Month

June 13, 2014 8:48 AM
In honor of National Cell Phone Courtesy Month, Jacqueline Whitmore, one of the nation's foremost experts on etiquette and protocol, offers these steps for wireless phone users who want to avoid offending others:
1. Be all there. When you're in a meeting, performance, courtroom or other busy area, let calls go to voicemail to avoid a disruption. In some instances, turning your phone off may be the best solution.
2. Keep it private. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid discussing private or confidential information in public. You never know who may be in hearing range.
3. Keep your cool. Don't display anger during a public call. Conversations that are likely to be emotional should be held where they will not embarrass or intrude on others.
4. Learn to vibe. Use your wireless phone's silent or vibration settings in public places such as business meetings, religious services, schools, restaurants, theaters or sporting events so that you do not disrupt your surroundings.
5. Avoid "cell yell." Remember to use your regular conversational tone when speaking on your wireless phone. People tend to speak more loudly than normal and often don't recognize how distracting they can be to others.
6. Follow the rules. Some places, such as hospitals or airplanes, restrict or prohibit the use of mobile phones, so adhere to posted signs and instructions. Some jurisdictions may also restrict mobile phone use in public places.
7. Excuse yourself. If you are expecting a call that can't be postponed, alert your companions ahead of time and excuse yourself when the call comes in; the people you are with should take precedence over calls you want to make or receive.
8. Send a message. Use Text Messaging to send and receive messages without saying a single word.
9. Watch and listen discreetly. New multimedia applications such as streaming video and music are great ways to stay informed and access the latest entertainment. However, adjust the volume based on your surroundings in much the same way that you would adjust your ringer volume. Earphones are a great way to avoid distracting others in public areas.
10. Alert silently. When using your phone's walkie-talkie feature, send the person you're trying to reach a Call Alert before starting to speak. If you're around other people, turn off your phone's external speaker and use the vibration setting to minimize any disturbance and to respect your contact's privacy.
11. Be a good Samaritan. Use your cell phone to help others. According to CTIA, The Wireless Association, more than 224,000 calls a day are made to 911 and other emergency numbers by mobile phone users who report crimes and potentially life-threatening emergencies.
12. Focus on driving. Practice wireless responsibility while driving. Don't make or answer calls while in heavy traffic or in hazardous driving conditions. Place calls when your vehicle is not moving, and use a hands-free device to help focus attention on safety. Always make safety your most important call.
13. Spread the word. Discuss cell phone manners with friends and family members. Tell them that you are practicing new wireless phone etiquette rules and offer to share them.

Attention FTTH IPTV Customers

March 31, 2014 3:26 PM
Recently, you may have heard about discussions with Viacom, the owner of cable networks such as Nickelodeon, MTV, Comedy Central and many others. We prefer to not involve our customers in private business negotiations, but Viacom may decide to pull their channels today at 10:59 p.m. from some of the cable operators who are seeking fair rates from them. It’s Viacom’s decision that could lead to the loss of signal for you, as we would have preferred to keep these networks on while our talks continue. Viacom demanded a rate increase that's 40 times the rate of inflation for these networks. Imagine pulling up to the gas pump and finding that gas has gone from $3.50 a gallon to $6.00 – overnight. Often, when providers like us don’t agree to a network’s demands during negotiations, networks will pull their signal from you to improve their leverage and get us to agree to their demands. Significant network fee increases directly impact your bill and rest assured – we’re on your side to keep these fees low. As a small, local business, we at Evertek sincerely appreciate your loyalty and patience as we work to maintain the MTV Networks and strive to deliver the best value for you.For more information on the status of these negotiations, please go to:
http://tvonmyside.com/
enter in our 51338 zip code. You will notice the name of NICP pops up. We are a part of this group of providers which allows us to negotiate as a larger market to get the best possible price for our customers. The website can answer questions as to how you can view the programming beyond your tv. You may view the comments made by real customers like yourself, as well as post comments to the site. We thank you again for your loyalty and hope that this situation can be resolved quickly.

Name of the Game: Change

February 15, 2012 2:52 PM
Over the years not much has stayed the same.  Rural communities have come and gone.  Bell-bottoms were in and disco lights out.  This has been true in the world of technology also.  What once began as a 62-line phone company has now grown into a full communications platform.

In 1905, Lone Tree Rural Telephone Company was established in Everly by a group of local farmers.  They needed a means of communication without physical travel.  As this telephone product became more popular a 62-line switchboard was put into the local drug store and the company was renamed United Farmers Telephone Company.  The local farmers at the time were the ones who owned and maintained the lines.

In May of 1961, the Board approved the purchase of new dialing equipment to replace the Magento Switchboards, which eliminated the need for the dialing operators.  UFTC saw a growing need for additional services and created Evertek, Inc., a subsidiary of United Farmers Telephone.

Evertek purchased the Everly Cable TV system in January of 1987 from Everly Communications.  Two years later, Evertek launched Wireless Cable TV utilizing a licensed frequency auctioned off by the FCC.   This made it possible to rebroadcast Cable TV via a wireless signal to the rural communities.  With a growing demand for service, Evertek expanded their reach by building separate wireless systems into Spirit Lake, Rutland, St. Joe, Archer, and Somers.

With technology booming, Evertek began offering a dial up Internet service to their local exchange in 1993.  Seeing the possibilities of what the Internet could offer, Evertek started researching ways in order to offer faster speeds to their customers.  In 1999, Evertek launched a high speed cable modem service to the town of Everly and dial up was a way of the past.  Shortly there after, Evertek launched a wireless Internet connection via the licensed frequency it maintains.  This provided a means to the rural customers who had no way of being able to receive Internet access previously.   In November of 2001, Evertek went a step further by offering the first Non-Line of Sight Internet service to the residents of Pocahontas, Iowa.  This service won Evertek the Wemmie Award, or Wireless Emmie.  This Non Line of Site Internet would be installed in 15 communities over the next 5 years.

With a well-defined business plan, Evertek began to acquire Cable TV Franchises in 2002.  With the addition of Albert City, Moville, Kingsley and Quimby, Evertek had secured a good foot print in all of NW Iowa.  During the same time frame, Evertek launched a Digital Cable TV service in Everly and Kingsley.  This was to fit the growing need for customers that wanted more options and a better viewing experience.  Today, Evertek offers Cable TV service to 10 towns and utilizes 2 tower sites to broadcast Cable TV to rural areas.

United Farmers Telephone celebrated their 100 Year Anniversary April 9, 2005.  Today, Evertek and United Farmers Telephone, offer a wide range of services to communities throughout North West Iowa and parts of Nebraska and South Dakota.
