Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management

Iowa was once covered by a vast expanse of prairie wildflowers and grasses, often described as an ocean of prairie grass gently waving with the wind. As the years progressed, Iowa’s prairie was converted to farm land; less than one-tenth of one percent of prairie remains in the state.

The Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management program of the Pocahontas County Conservation Board has been created to establish and preserve a low maintenance roadside that is captivating for visitors and beneficial for wildlife. The prevention of weeds and the control of soil erosion are additional management benefits. The IRVM program is a conservation practice that provides scenic diversity today as we conserve our natural heritage “for those who follow.”
