Parks & Areas

The Pocahontas County Conservation Board welcomes everyone to the many parks, wildlife areas, and historical sites of Pocahontas County.  Many of the 40 sites and 3,000 acres managed by the PCCB have been preserved in a natural state and provide great opportunities for a variety of outdoor pursuits.  We encourage everyone to take time to visit and investigate all of the natural and cultural features of our county.

The county’s newest park, Melson Park, opened in the spring of 2007 and is located alongside the Three Rivers Trail east of Rolfe.  2007 summer projects have included building an overview at Swan Lake north of Laurens and a new sleeping cabin at Meredith Park north of Plover.   On August 17, 2008, we will celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Wiegert Prairie Fall Fest.

These are just a few of the many things happening here at PCCB.  Feel free to stop in at our Nature Center located just north of the hospital and manor on Highway 4 in Pocahontas for more information.  We look forward to seeing you.

Meredith Park Camper Cabin

Meredith Park, located l l/2 miles north of Plover on N57 in north central Pocahontas County, is a popular place for fishing, swimming, picnicking, and camping.

During the summer of 2007, PCCB joined with Prairie Partners RC & D to construct a sleeping cabin out of Iowa native white oak logs. Quietly tucked among willows and cottonwoods along the south lakeshore, the cabin offers a secluded spot to relax and enjoy the outdoors with family and friends.  With the addition of the new cabin, PCCB predicts the former gravel pit will be even more popular.

The cabin is heated and air-conditioned and has electricity.  The kitchen area is furnished with a microwave and small refrigerator.  Oak cabinets provide storage and work space.  A table and benches may be used for eating meals or playing board games.  A full-sized bunk bed and futon offer comfortable sleeping for six people.

A park bench provides porch seating along with a wonderful view of the lake.

A fire ring, upright grill, picnic table, and water hydrant are located just outside the cabin.  Firewood is available in the campground ($2/armload).  Parking, a shower house, and modern restrooms are just a short walk to the east.

In addition to an excellent 5 l/2 acre natural swimming and fishing lake, Meredith Park also features a new playground.  Built in 2005 from 15,000 recycled milk jugs, the slides, climbing wall, fort area and swings offer a safe, fun place for kids to play.
